Celebrate Thai New Year with Janthra Spa!

Yes indeed, we are in the year 2567, if we refer to the birth year of Buddha, 543 years before that of Jesus Christ!

Every year, from April 13th to 15th, the whole of Thailand celebrates Songkran ("passage" in Sanskrit). This national holiday is much more than just a change of calendar: it embodies a blend of traditions, spirituality, and festivities. Throughout the country, from north to south, in Bangkok or Phuket, the streets are filled with joy, music, and above all, a lot of water. The three days are therefore public holidays, allowing every Thai to take part in the festivities in complete relaxation.

SONGKRAN, A SPIRITUAL FESTIVAL

Songkran is synonymous with purification and renewal. It's a time when Thais come together for various occasions. In particular, they honour their ancestors and, as a sign of gratitude, wash the hands of their elders with water scented with rose petals and jasmine. During the festivities, you'll find miniature pagodas and religious structures made of sand (the chedis) in Buddhist temples. Many people come to make offerings to Buddha and the monks, whether it's fruits, flowers, water, or even buckets filled with sand. Why so much sand, you may ask? It's a symbol of construction. All Thais also pay homage to the monks who purify spectators during the processions of Buddha statues.

SONGKRAN, THE WATER FESTIVAL

Water is a very important element during Thai New Year, as it is believed to purify the body and soul and ward off evil spirits. Buddha statues are therefore cleaned once a year, at this time of year, and scented water is poured over them. Today, the tradition has evolved, and the entire Thailand in sprinkled in the streets, hence the nickname "Water Festival". Sometimes, some people even cover their faces with talcum or coloured powder or powder before getting soaked!

Beyond its spiritual aspect, Songkran is also an opportunity to celebrate life and strengthen social ties. This festival is also celebrated in other countries such as Laos or Cambodia. At Janthra Spa, in the heart of Paris 6th arrondissement, we celebrate this Thai New Year with enthusiasm and gratitude, but above all, we embody this spirit of well-being and sharing all year round during our traditional Thai massages and spa cares...
